Managing multiple accounts (sub-accounts) in Plug

Explains what sub-accounts are in Plug, how they are independent but tied to one seed phrase, and how to create or recover them.

Updated over a week ago

In Plug, sub-accounts are independent wallets that all belong to the same seed phrase.

When you first create a Plug Wallet, your first account, often referred to as the main account, is technically your first sub-account. From there, you can create additional sub-accounts, each functioning like a completely separate wallet.

What Makes Sub-Accounts Unique?

Each sub-account is:

  • Fully independent from the others

  • Has its own name, portfolio, and activity

  • Comes with its own set of addresses

  • Tied to the same seed phrase for recovery

Sub-accounts cannot be linked together on-chain, and there’s no public trace connecting them. They are isolated at the address level, even though they all belong to the same Plug wallet.

This means you can:

  • Separate personal and professional use

  • Use different accounts for different DeFi strategies

  • Manage assets with more privacy

Each sub-account will include one address per supported blockchain. To learn more about how addresses work across chains, click here.

How to Create a New Sub-Account

  1. On the home screen, tap your account name in the top left

  2. Tap Add Another Wallet

  3. Give it a name

  4. Tap Create Wallet

Your new sub-account will now appear in the list, fully independent from your other accounts.

Re-Importing Sub-Accounts

If you ever re-import your wallet using your seed phrase, only the first sub-account will appear by default.

To restore additional sub-accounts:

  1. Repeat the Add Another Wallet flow

  2. For each sub-account, repeat once

  3. Sub-accounts will reappear in the original order they were created

For example, if you had 5 sub-accounts, you’ll need to go through the add wallet process 4 times to regenerate them all.
